SYWB perform at Music for Youth National Festival!

Southampton Youth Wind Band have been invited to perform at the prestigious Music for Youth National Festival!

The festival will be taking place on Saturday 11 July 2026 at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

The Music for Youth National Festival 2026 brings thousands of talented young musicians to Birmingham for three unforgettable days of live performances, inspiring workshops and creative experiences. From powerful orchestras and uplifting choirs to jazz bands, ensembles and bold new music makers, the festival showcases the incredible diversity and talent of young people from across the UK.

Young Musicians Monthly Open Mic Night at The Stage Door!

We are delighted to continue partnering with The Stage Door and J Fashole-Luke to host a series of open mic nights to the city for young musicians (under 18) to participate in!  Each night will feature a house band of local musicians with a wide variety of styles, genres and instruments who will host and support young people to participate. 

Where is it:

Performances will take place upstairs at The Stage Door where the alcoholic bar will be closed and we will provide backline instruments and any tech that might be required for individuals or groups to perform or play back their music.

How to take part:

For Under 18s!

Sign ups will be operated via a digital form using the button below.

You will then be contacted for more information about your set or technical/support requirements by the music hub team to ensure you are ready to perform on the night!

Participants and parents are also very welcome to attend a session in advance and observe only - with no pressure to perform unless you feel ready.

Parents will need to book ‘pay what you can’ tickets to attend with their children via button below.

Please note:

  • Anyone in school year 11 or below will need to be chaperoned either by a parent/guardian or by a teacher if attending with a school group. 

  • Performers are asked to use family friendly lyrics, but we can’t promise this is always followed. If you have any concerns about this, please speak to a member of the team.

Gig Night - Summer Showcase & Fundraiser!

Gig Night is returning with a Summer Showcase and Fundraiser event at St Albans Church!

There will be Food, raffle prizes, guitar auction & 12+ bands!
Our youth ensemble’s Groove Syndicate & Groove Merchant will be performing as part of the line-up.

All proceeds will go to towards the Gignight.org.uk charity.

Doors will open at 6.30pm, with the gig starting at 7pm.

Southampton and IOW Music are proud to partner with the Gig Night Charity, providing young artists with a regular platform to perform and develop their music and confidence.

Gig Night is a charity providing a grass-roots youth music project in Southampton to create or join a band, perform as a solo artist, learn song-writing techniques and develop other skills required to deliver a live performance.

Gig Night performers apply for a performance slot via a google form. They are awarded a slot based on live experience, material and musicianship.

Performing slots are open to any young person in years 7-13.

Parking: available in local side streets.

Tickets: £12 adults (£15 with beverage), £2.50 young people available via the button below.

The events are free for all young people who contribute to the night.

SYBB performing at St Cross Fete!

Southampton Youth Brass Band will be performing at St Cross Fete!

St Cross Fete is a traditional Summer Fete in the beautiful grounds of the medieval Hospital of Saint Cross.

Southampton Youth Brass Band will perform 3 x 20 minute slots during the 2-5pm timeslot.

Tickets: Adults £3, Children Free (this is payable on the door)

Funds raised are for the church at St Cross, Winchester Bereavement Group, Winchester Young Carers and Winchester Hospice.

Parking: Ample free car parking available on site.

As part of our commitment to youth voice, we are running creative youth consultation sessions

These creative consultations open to anyone up to the age of 18 interested in music.

Anyone attending is invited to bring along friends. We'll use the time to do a fun activity and discuss music: from genre-preferences to career goals. 

All sessions will take place at our space in Mayflower Studios (142 Above Bar St, SO14 7BL) with lots of snacks! This is a great opportunity to take part in a fun and free creative activity, and visit our recording space.

Vocal Festival Prom at Carisbrooke Castle (DATE TBC)

Join us again for our junior prom event on the bowling green at Carisbrooke Castle! 

Bring your students along for an opportunity to perform on the green with fantastic visibility for parents, friends and families to come along and watch on the raised areas around the green and bring a picnic.  This year this event will be solely focused on singing and our theme in 2026 will focus on local stories, myths & legends as part of our Songs of Place project. 

A songbook including stories, myths and legends from the Island collected from young people will be produced by the music hub and workshops will also be available to support this.  As always we will run a site visit and meeting prior to the event to discuss logistics with teachers which will take place in early May from  4pm - 5pm at the castle as a twilight meeting.  In the case of inclement weather we will also have a reserve date.

Could you create Sockbrina Carpenter, Jimi Handrix, or Elphaba's friend Soq? During this session, we'll teach you to build a sock puppet and ask that you build a music figure that's relevant to you - perhaps a musician, a singer-songwriter, a character from a musical or someone else? I look forward to finding out who you create and why!

Southampton Youth Orchestra: Musical Portraits

SIOW Music presents Southampton Youth Orchestra: Musical Portraits.

Two of our own talented students make their solo debuts with 'Danse Macabre' and the ever-popular 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto. The first half is completed by Coleridge-Taylor's 'Song of Hiawatha Overture' - largely forgotten today, but held in high regard early last century by composers including Stanford, Parry and Elgar.

Finishing the concert will be Mussorgsky's monumental 'Pictures at an Exhibition'

Wellbeing Music Workshop at Monty's Community Hub

Monty’s Community Hub in Sholing are delivering a Wellbeing Music Workshop for young people aged 11–18 on Saturday 21st March 2026, 1pm–4pm.

The session is part of Sara’s (Girls Make Music Facilitator) new creative wellbeing practice How To Hear Yourself, which uses music, sound and creative exploration to help young people build confidence, express themselves, and connect with their emotions in a supportive environment.

During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore sounds and samples through listening activities

  • Experiment with instruments, voice and recording

  • Create their own tracks or soundscapes using accessible music software

  • Collaborate with others and try out creative ideas in a relaxed setting

No previous musical experience is required. The workshop is designed to be very accessible with a low barrier to entry, and focuses on creativity, curiosity and self-expression rather than technical ability. Participants are welcome to bring any instruments if they wish.

 Location: Monty’s Community Hub, Sholing

 Time: 1pm – 4pm (lunch included – pizza)

Southampton and Isle of Wight Music Services proudly present our annual Windband Pyramid Concert — an exciting evening showcasing the exceptional young musicians from Airplay (Foundation Wind Band), Pulse8 (Intermediate Wind Band), Studio Band (Jazz Band), and the Southampton Youth Wind Band (Advanced Wind Band).

 

The programme will feature vibrant performances from each ensemble, culminating in spectacular joint items including Jai Ho and Don't Stop Me Now — a celebration of talent, energy, and the joy of music-making!

Southampton Youth Wind Band: Windows of the World

Southampton Youth Wind Band (SYWB) is the top-tier wind band of Southampton and IOW Music, whose membership consists of young musicians from Southampton and beyond. 

Under the direction of John Hanchett, SYWB are rapidly gaining the reputation of being one of the top youth wind bands in the country.

Their concert, Windows of the World, will take you on a musical journey across the globe. The programme will include two original compositions by band members Corey Wilson & Ellie Bartlett, in addition to well-known music from stage and screen, and popular wind band classics.

Young Musicians Monthly Open Mic Night at The Stage Door!

We are delighted to continue partnering with The Stage Door and J Fashole-Luke to host a series of open mic nights to the city for young musicians (under 18) to participate in!  Each night will feature a house band of local musicians with a wide variety of styles, genres and instruments who will host and support young people to participate. 

Where is it:

Performances will take place upstairs at The Stage Door where the alcoholic bar will be closed and we will provide backline instruments and any tech that might be required for individuals or groups to perform or play back their music.

How to take part:

For Under 18s!

Sign ups will be operated via a digital form using the button below.

Students and parents can sign up independently or teachers are welcome to sign up school groups to perform.

You will then be contacted for more information about your set or technical/support requirements by the music hub team to ensure you are ready to perform on the night!

Participants and parents are also very welcome to attend a session in advance and observe only - with no pressure to perform unless you feel ready.

Parents will need to book ‘pay what you can’ tickets to attend with their children via button below.

Please note:

  • Anyone in school year 11 or below will need to be chaperoned either by a parent/guardian or by a teacher if attending with a school group. 

  • Performers are asked to use family friendly lyrics, but we can’t promise this is always followed. If you have any concerns about this, please speak to a member of the team.
