BSO: Set Works Live - Key Stage 4 Concert

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at Turner Sims Concert Hall in partnership with BSO, Turner Sims and University of Southampton.

Turner Sims and Southampton & Isle of Wight Music invite your school to a free concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra offering GCSE/BTEC music students the chance to hear live set works and perform with BSO musicians. The second half of the concert focuses on composition.

The BSO musicians will perform a new work by Patrick Bailey which will incorporate ideas from your school. These ideas will be submitted via an activity that you will be sent in advance of the concert to complete at school. The composer, who is also presenting the concert, will explain their process, approaches and techniques to give your students further insight into composition.

Suitable for current KS4 students and those interested in taking music as an option following KS3.

BSO Explore the Orchestra: Four Elements (CPD Session)

Explore the Orchestra: Four Elements features music that seeks to uncover the mysteries of the four elements of our natural world that have inspired scientific discovery.

So, prepare to open your mind as we go on a journey exploring music from the traditional and familiar, to the contemporary and unknown. This concert will feature a participatory song and body percussion piece for everyone to perform.

Through these pieces, the audience will learn to sing and perform with the orchestra and be introduced to all the instruments that make up a Symphony Orchestra.


To support teacher's involvement, we’re offering a free Teacher CPD session on Monday 10th November from 4:15 - 5:45 pm at Portsmouth Guildhall.

This session will provide teachers with everything they need to prepare their class for the concert, alongside valuable resources and fun teaching ideas.

We ask that at least one member of staff from each participating school attends the CPD session – who will also be involved on the day of the concert.

Welsh National Opera: Schools Concert

Step into the wonderful world of opera and classical music with WNO through this free and inspiring Schools Concert which offers an live orchestra experience designed to support the National Curriculum. 

Aimed to inspire and increase love of music and creativity, students will be encouraged to use their voices to sing in different ranges, dynamics, clap rhythms, stamp along to different time signatures and develop an understanding of the history of music in a relaxed setting.

Gig Night - live music for young people

Southampton and IOW Music are proud to partner with the Gig Night Charity, providing young artists with a regular platform to perform and develop their music and confidence.

Gig Night is a charity providing a grass-roots youth music project in Southampton to create or join a band, perform as a solo artist, learn song-writing techniques and develop other skills required to deliver a live performance.

Gig Night performers apply for a performance slot via a google form. They are awarded a slot based on live experience, material and musicianship.

Gig night runs monthly at the Old Chemist engaging young musicians from all over Southampton.

Performing slots are open to any young person in years 7-13.

Parking: available in local side streets.

Tickets:  £7 adults & under 18’s £2.50.

The events are free for all young people who contribute to the night.

University of Southampton Voices: The Bells of Paradise at Turner Sims

The University of Southampton Voices present a sparkling Christmas concert. The Bells of Paradise is a collection of carols and Christmas songs from around the world and through the ages.

Harvey Brough, Professor of Music, arranges and directs a seasonal celebration. The 70-strong USV choir is made up from staff members and students from the University of Southampton, together with singers from the city.

For this performance, USV are joined by children’s choirs from local schools, organised and supported by Southampton & Isle of Wight Music. They are accompanied by soloist Faith Waddell, pianist Liam Dunachie, harpist Hugh Webb, and the Julian Poore brass quartet.

Festive refreshments will be available for purchase from the Turner Sims bar.

Tickets:

  • Band A: £20 (£18 Friends)

  • Band B: £18 (£16.20 Friends)

  • Band C: £10 (£9 Friends)

  • Students and Under 18s: £8 (Bands B and C)

  • Schools: £7.50 per ticket (Bands B and C)

Southampton University Symphony Orchestra at Turner Sims: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story

Free informal performance by Southampton University Symphony Orchestra at Turner Sims on Wednesday 4th December at 7pm.

Southampton University Symphony Orchestra and Turner Sims would like to invite you to a free performance featuring Leonard Bernstein's thrilling ‘Symphonic Dances from West Side Story’!

Featuring songs and dances from Bernstein's hit musical West Side Story, which has recently seen a brand new film remake. Though you don't need to know the musical to be able to enjoy the wonderful music! This performance is perfect for local families with children up to 15 and is an ideal opportunity for young people learning an instrument, who are interested in learning an instrument, or anyone looking for a fun evening out! We’re aiming to introduce as many young people to the amazing world of orchestral music as we can!

This informal performance will be on Wednesday 4th December at 7pm at Turner Sims, the music venue at University of Southampton Highfield Campus, and will last about an hour.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Parking: Free parking is available in all University car parks after 5pm on weekdays. Details for other modes of transport can be found on the Turner Sims website.

BSO On Your Doorstep: Curious Creatures Family Concert

Join us for a concert of family friendly music, with BSO and local young musicians from the Isle of Wight.

Come and join 14 BSO musicians, a young Isle of Wight string group, and someone to guide you through the music – this relaxed performance is perfect for young audiences going to a concert for the first time.  The afternoon will involve some listening, some participatory elements, and you’ll be sure to experience a mixture of styles – from Bjork to Moana, as well as relaxing classics. Designed with families in mind, let the music take you from forests to oceans and explore the curious creatures of the natural world. Do join us for this adventurous afternoon!

Welsh National Opera: Schools Concert at MAST

This free and inspiring Schools Concert offers a live orchestral experience for Key Stage 2 students and is designed to support the National Music Curriculum in Wales and England.

Aimed to inspire and increase love of music and creativity, students will be encouraged to use their voices to sing in different ranges and dynamics, clap rhythms, stamp along to different time signatures and develop an understanding of the history of music.

Fun, lively and engaging, expect popular hits and less familiar pieces from opera, film, and television, brought to life by the world class WNO Orchestra and a group of sensational soloists. The perfect opportunity to hear and enjoy live music, up close and personal, in a relaxed setting.

Alongside presenter Ruth Rosales and conductor Olivia Clarke, the music is brought to life by the world class WNO Orchestra, and a group of sensational opera singers. 

There will be plenty of opportunity for everyone to interact with the music, from dancing and clapping to singing along – all while learning about dynamics, rhythm, speed and of course, the instruments that make up an Orchestra.

This concert is only available to school group bookings.
