Opera for the Very Young – Stories through Sound

OperaUpClose is a national touring opera company with storytelling, partnership, and innovation at its heart. Intimate in scale, mighty in impact. OperaUpClose will run a series of collaborative and co-creative workshops on the Isle of Wight taking children and teachers on a journey from reception through to Year 2 as we develop a new opera based on the beautiful picture book Flotsam by David Wiesner.

Led by a creative team including composer/writer and designer the workshops will engage children and their teachers, using Flotsam - recognised by the BookTrust (2024) as “breath-taking, intricately detailed” - as inspiration for a co-creative process that will combine music-making with visual art and notation through mark-making. The aim is to build teachers’ skills and confidence in delivering creative music activities, while also generating material for a new opera for early years that will tour schools and theatres in Autumn 2026.

This project, run in partnership with the Southampton & Isle of Wight Music, is central to a broadening of an early years music strategy that integrates opera into music curriculums and explores the long-term benefits for pupil's creativity and appreciation for the arts.

We are looking for 2/3 schools that can take part in a series of workshops working with the same group(s) of children across the activity and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis:

DATES

Reception: w/c 16 June 2025 – 45 min workshop led by the OperaUpClose creative

team

Year 1: w/c 22 September 2025 – 45 – 60 min workshop

Recorder Extravaganza Monday 18th May 2026

Recorder Extravaganza with Palisander Monday 18th May 2026 Queensgate Primary School 6pm - 7pm KS1, KS2 in partnership with Fairest Isle Festival

Interested in setting up a new recorder ensemble in your school or teaching recorder to your whole class?  This project is the perfect opportunity for the hub to support you with this through CPD, resources, workshops and a performance event on the Isle of Wight!  The NPME states that all schools should have an instrumental ensemble so this project will allow you an avenue to set one up in your setting.

Participating schools will be given;  a brand new set of songs and resources for beginner recorder players written and created by Miriam; take part in an online CPD session (Tuesday 10th March 4pm - 5pm) introducing the resources with lots of hints and tips on how to teach your class or group to play the recorder; receive a free workshop from the hub to introduce the resources and then the opportunity to take part in a final performance.  The hub can also loan sets of recorders for free if you don’t have any in school currently.

The project will culminate in a massed performance event for Isle of Wight Schools after school on Monday 18th May hosted by Queensgate Primary in East Cowes.  Your group will have the opportunity to play alongside the other school groups in the project and hear incredible performances from Miriam and her recorder supergroup Palisander!  Southampton schools are also very welcome to take part in all the other elements of this project barring the performance event (unless you want to travel to the Island).

Approximate timings: 4.15pm - 4.30pm School ensembles/groups arrive , 4.30pm - 5.30pm Rehearsal with Palisander, 6pm - 7pm Concert

BSO Explore The Orchestra: Four Elements KS2 Schools Concert

Portsmouth Guildhall at 1:30 pm Thursday 22nd January 2026 KS2

This free concert is designed for KS2 students, and will be presented by award-winning composer, James Redwood. Explore the Orchestra: Four Elements features music that seeks to uncover the mysteries of the four elements of our natural world that have inspired scientific discovery. So, prepare to open your mind as we go on a journey exploring music from the traditional and familiar, to the contemporary and unknown. This concert will feature a participatory song and body percussion piece for everyone to perform. Through these pieces, the audience will learn to sing and perform with the orchestra and be introduced to all the instruments that make up a Symphony Orchestra.

To support teacher's involvement, we’re offering a free Teacher CPD session on Monday 10th November from 4:15 - 5:45 pm at the Portsmouth Guildhall. This session will provide teachers with everything they need to prepare their class for the concert, alongside valuable resources and fun teaching ideas. We ask that at least one member of staff from each participating school attends the CPD session – who will also be involved on the day of the concert.  Link to book the tickets online: https://bsolive.com/events/eto-four-elements-portsmouth/
