A Cockerel-headed Man: An Original Song by Jo Downs for SIOW Music & Brading Roman Villa

For our 10 Minute Sing & Sing this week, we have an original song by Jo Downs: A Cockerel-headed Man.

This song has been specially written and commissioned for our partners Brading Roman Villa as part of a wider project on the Isle of Wight called ‘Can You Hear Us?’ and the ‘Songs of Place’ we are creating for this.

A Cockerel-headed Man! is about one of the famous pictures that make up the mosaic floor at Brading Roman Villa - Gallus the Cockerel-headed Man! This song has been written in the style of Victorian Music Hall as a nod to the time that the Villa was discovered.

You can listen to the track on our Songbank, or Sign and Sing along using our 10 Minute Sign & Sing learning and performance videos.

The Wheel of The Year: 10 Minute Sign & Sing

This week’s 10 Minute Sign & Sing teaches you the makaton signs, body percussion and lyrics to an original song written by our fantastic music hub composer Jo Downs.

‘The Wheel of The Year’ is about folklore and the different traditions within the British Isles that happen throughout each year and with the changing seasons, including May Pole Dancing and Equionox. It was written for the Mardi Gras, so it fuses folk music with some Latin rhythms!

You can find this 10 Minute Sign and Sing in our SongBank, along with many other songs and 5 Minute Rhythm & Rhyme videos, via the button below and on our youtube channel!

Retelling Our Stories - Black History Month 2024

We are so excited to have collaborated with local artists Shannon B and producer Sera Bless for 2024’s Black History Month song!

2024’s Black History Month song is based on a theme of Reclaiming Narratives; showcasing untold stories, correcting historical inaccuracies, challenging the narratives that have often overlooked the contributions and achievements of Black individuals.

The song ‘Retelling our Stories’ is now live in our Songbank. To accompany the song, we have made a KS2/KS3 music curriculum resource.

This resource includes outlining the topic, researching the themes and writing your own verse to fit with the existing chorus and example verse.

Find the song and curriculum resource in our songbank via the button below.
